Purpose and Mission

Who  We  Are  and  Our  Purpose

The Miss Greater Richmond Scholarship Program is an affiliate of the Miss Virginia and Miss America Scholarship Organizations.  The Miss America Organization, with its state and local affiliates, is the number one resource in the world for women to receive educational scholarships.  In 2006, the Miss America Scholarship Organization made available over $45 million dollars to 12,000 women. It is the financial support of organizations, businesses and individuals … from the smallest companies to the Fortune 500 companies … who make the $45 million dollars in scholarships available nationwide.

The Miss Greater Richmond Scholarship Program is a non-profit scholarship program whose purpose is awarding scholarships to deserving young women ages 17 to 24 years old and providing a forum for their community service.  The program includes two additional scholarship competitions for Miss Teen (ages 13-17), and Miss Preteen (ages 10-12) Greater Richmond.  The Little Miss and Junior Miss divisions are awarded savings bonds as gifts.

The  Results

Locally, the program has awarded over $35,000 in scholarships to our contestants in the past five years.   Miss Greater Richmond 2007, Jessie Buckman, was first runner-up in the Miss Virginia Pageant where she won an $8,500 scholarship and a $1,000 talent award.  In the first six months of 2007, she has earned $12,000 in scholarship money towards her college education.   In the teen program, Caitlin Brunell, Miss Teen Greater Richmond won Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.  Her scholarship winnings total $30,000.  Last year’s Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen and Miss Teen Greater Richmond 2005, Brittany Young, was second runner-up and talent winner in the 2006 Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.  She was awarded $18,000 towards her college education.  In 2006, our Miss Preteen Greater Richmond, Allison Exner, was first runner-up, and in 2007, Andolyn Medina was second runner-up in Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Preteen division.

What  You  Can  Do  To  Help

It is the financial support of local citizens, businesses and civic organizations whose charitable contributions to the Miss Greater Richmond Scholarship Program make it possible to award scholarships.  We appreciate monetary donations plus attendance, support and participation in our competitions and our annual golf tournament fundraising event in September.  We also welcome volunteers to our committee.  Please browse our website for information and details: www.missgreaterrichmond.com.  You may also enjoy browsing the Miss Virginia website: www.missva.com and the Miss America site: www.missamerica.org.

Thank  You

On behalf of the volunteers of the Miss Greater Richmond Scholarship Program, we greatly appreciate your personal interest, contributions, participation and support for this outstanding scholarship opportunity for young women.
